Gut-wrenching Goodbyes

This has been a tough week for little Judah Buddha.  We're still not sure what the problem was, but he cried for almost two days straight, went on a nursing strike, went crazy every time I tried to put him to sleep, and was generally miserable.  Gammy Hayes suggested it might be first year molars starting to make their way in, and she's probably right.  On Friday, as a huge answer to our prayers Thursday night, Judah woke up as his normal self...eating, sleeping and perfectly happy.

It's blazing hot here in Beijing, so we've been trying to get over to the beautiful swimming pool in a neighboring apartment complex almost every day.  Judah LOVES the water...to the point that I'm starting to think maybe he should have a bit more of a healthy fear for it, but we're sure that will come later.

We just received the news that two of Judah's favorite people - Auntie Stacey and Uncle Derek - will be leaving Beijing in September (we'll be gone all of August, and they're going down to find an apartment next week, so this is our last full week together) to move onto the clean, orderly, beautiful island of Singapore.  Derek just started an EMBA with the University of Chicago's Singapore location, and was able to transfer down to an Ogilvy office there.  After six years together in Beijing, it's impossible to describe how much they will be missed, but we look forward to visiting!

Like Father, Like Son

Since we didn't get to go to church on Father's Day thanks to the little Lion's stomach issues, the boys wore their new accessories to church this past week.  Cute, right?

Lucky feet

I "lost" my main camera's battery charger for awhile there and was unable to upload the pictures to the computer, thus we are taking a step back in time. Luckily after searching every nook and cranny of our apartment numerous times I found it. In the camera bag. Who would have guessed?! Anyway... Before Judah was born a good friend sent him this super cute pair of fortune cookie shoes.

Stand and be counted!

We had a milestone day today! The little lion stood for the first time! We were at a our friend Stephanie's house and Judah got so distracted playing with her daughter, Mirabelle's, toys that he stood for at least a minute before he realized what he was doing. Then to his delight and my fanatical cheering he did it again...and again...and again. He was quite pleased with himself and I was too excited for him to be emotional, but will not make any promises for when he takes his first steps. Little baby Ziggy is growing up!

Judah also learned how to blow kisses today and on our walk home showed off his new trick by spreading the love to school children, migrant workers, fruit sellers, and just about anyone that would look in his general direction. He's gregarious, just like his Daddy.  No pictures of that skill just yet.

Surprising Silke

A funny video of the Little Lion playing with his friend Silke.  Wait until the end when the Lion dirties his diaper and then surprises Silke.  It's password protected, and the password is (and will be for any other video I put up) his first name.

La Duzi

Judah's currently has his first case of L.D., which stands for la duzi - a Chinese term which is literally translated as "spicy stomach" but means "diarrhea".  Prior to moving to China, this condition would be, for me personally, a cause for much concern.  However, here it is so common - and we're not just talking amongst foreigners - that hardly a week goes by without experiencing la duzi at least a few times.  So much so that all of our friends call it L.D. and it's a regular enough topic that it's passable for small talk or dinner conversation.

A: "Hey, How's everything going?"
B: "Good, how about you?"
A: "Okay, but I had to jump out of a cab today because I had L.D."
B: "Oh, that's annoying."

When I was teaching, the book we used had a unit on common health problems.  As a conversation starter, the students were asked identify some common ailments they'd had in the past month.  Cold, fever, headache, backache, stomachache, sore muscles....100% of my students identified "stomachache".  Every time.  When they were late for class these college aged Chinese kids would not hesitate to announce that they had la duzi to me in front of all of their classmates.  I cannot imagine the mortification at the mention of the word "diarrhea" in any American classroom.

American classroom
Teacher: "You're five minutes late."
Student 1 (Johnny): "I'm sorry, Mrs. Knapp, my car wouldn't start."
Student 2 (Sally): "It's true, he called me for a ride but I was already here."

Chinese classroom
Teacher: "You're five minutes late."
Student 1 (Peter Pan): "I'm sorry, Mrs. Knapp, I had la duzi."
Student 2 (Seven Salt): "It's true, I heard Peter Pan in the bathroom."
(Actual names used to protect the hilarity of the fact that these are the names actually used by Chinese people choosing English names.  A person by the name of "Tinkle" just joined Justin's company.)

Anyway, that being said, it's a whole other story with a lot more worry and alarm when your ten-month-old has diarrhea for the first time.  Poor Judah has also has a fever, which now seems to have subsided.  Justin and I have realized how much we love our child over the past few days as we plunge fearlessly into watery-poo-filled diapers, or as Justin experienced last night, a bath during which a child poos three separate times in the water.  Awesome.

I'm sure you parents out there have similar sob stories, but at this point I'm just thinking of wrapping Judah's entire lower body in Saran wrap until this whole thing blows over.

On a more light-hearted note, here are some recent photos of "Mr. Squirts".

Father's Day

Judah is so blessed to have such an amazing Daddy, and I'm blessed to have such an amazing partner in raising our son.  We've had a great time over the past ten months and although Judah was sick with a stomach bug on Father's Day, we still had a lot of fun together.  As a present, Judah gave Justin a frame with multiple photo slots spelling out the word "DADDY", using the pictures below.  It was a big hit.

A look back at the first few days of Justin becoming a Daddy...

And a few recent shots....
